Things I've noticed in Yoshi's New Island so far:

  • The art style is very dirty looking. Yoshi and everything in the foreground clashes with the (sometimes) faithfully hand-drawn background. Hefty Goonies just look like rolling balls of trash with its immense contrast in shading and lighting.
  • 3D is practically useless.
  • Yoshi no longer runs immediately or turns on a dime. He is very sluggish. Prepare to struggle against him throughout the entire game.
  • Yoshi no longer walks, either! He only defaults to run. There's no use for the circle-pad at all despite his being in 3-D, but lacking any degree of walking speed.
  • There is a delay when Yoshi takes out an egg to aim. You have to watch him finish animating while taking out an egg before the cross-hair appears.
  • It is no longer possible to move left and right while holding up on aiming the cross-hair, you must lock the position first.
  • Speaking of delays, there's a massive delay from pressing the B button after hopping off of an enemy to activate a higher flutter jump. To avoid this, as you are falling onto an enemy, you must hold the B button instead while hopping off. This might result in many accidental deaths.
  • Dying and starting from a middle ring will always leave you with ten stars, no longer the amount you last saved at that ring with.
  • Yoshi cannot spit out enemies as far as he used to. It's no longer a reliable means of taking out egg-based obstacles.
  • You can no longer reap coins or stars from yellow or red eggs when shooting at ? clouds.
  • Yellow, red, or rainbow eggs no longer guaranteed three bounces off walls when shot. If you miss shooting a rainbow egg, then screw you, pal!
  • No thumbnail pictures for levels on the map screen!
  • No more bonus mini-game for collecting flowers at the end of a stage.
  • No more bandit mini-games.
  • Still no items to use from the pause menu.
  • The music...
  • No more enemy-based mid-bosses! Only facing Kamek himself through simple puzzles or obstacles.
  • No more dying jingle, only a DING sound.
  • Platform mobiles no longer plays a music-box tune when turning.
  • Swallowing bubbles spat out by Crazee Dayzees do absolutely nothing. No more blowing bubbles!
  • Spitting watermelon seeds can no longer be able to claim coins.
  • Shark Chomp no longer chips his tooth when he bites onto solid land.
  • Jumping onto a Spray Fish results in instant damage instead of harmlessly hopping on it.
  • Being hit by Hot Lips' spitting lava no longer results in instant death, only taking normal damage.
  • You can no longer lick the skulls off Mousers, you just swallow them whole instead. Tragic loss, I'm sure.
  • Toadies capturing Baby Mario scene is very... rudimentary looking. Like it's unfinished.
  • Speaking of unfinished, when Yoshi is facing left and looking up, both Yoshi and Baby Mario STOP ANIMATING COMPLETELY. How is this even allowed?!
So many changes, and all of them for the worse.

This game is a disgrace. It utterly spits on the face of the original Yoshi's Island by beginning the game with the stork making the delivery to the wrong parents. Guys, Yoshi's Island was absolutely invalidated! As if one of the very best games in video game history and the most impressive game made for the SNES just, you know, happened for no reason at all!

How was this game... approved by anyone? How did the folks over at Arzest or whatever just go, "Yoshi's Island? No idea what you're talking about! Everyone loved Yoshi's Story, so let's just go with that, difficulty- and music-wise!", proceeding to make Yoshi's Island DS, and then go on to make that EVEN WORSE? And that should say a whole lot!

This isn't a matter of Nintendo needing to stop trying to make Yoshi's Island sequels because they end up as utter disappointing tragedies, but that Nintendo NEEDS to try making sequels, in-house, no more third-party disasters.

PS: Nintendo, quit using the word "New" in titles. There's nothing "new" whatsoever in this game. It continues the trend of taking better games from the past and stripping it of features and details with nothing gained.

UPDATE: :iconf1fth: has beat the game 100%, all levels and secret levels. We can only thank you for this brave and enduring sacrifice.

This is so random on my end but I'm replaying this game just to see if it was as bad as everyone said it was. I remember I used to disagree with this journal, but now? Yeah, Yoshi moves slow and delayed as hell, the music is very uninviting, the whole game gives off this weird, unwelcoming vibe. Not only are the levels too simple, but they're extremely short. Very weird that this game was ever published if I'm going to be honest, I'm convinced 13 year old me was just happy to have a new Yoshi game. I know better now fvgrb
